The Bryan Museum houses over 70,000 pieces that tell the story of Texas and the American West and contains many online resources for student research.
Each year, our annual “I Am Texas” theme encourages student contestants to use historical artifacts found in The Bryan Museum as inspiration to express their creativity.
Presenting the 2024 Featured Artifacts:
The building that currently houses The Bryan Museum in Galveston was built in 1894. Its current look was redesigned by architect George B. Stowe and rebuilt in 1902 after suffering significant structural damage from the 1900 Storm.
The orphanage operated here until 1984. An exhibit about the history of this building is on display at The Bryan Museum through the end of 2023.
This wonderful painting depicts two African American pioneer families in foreground with two children playing on left, two women and a small child near a covered wagon at center and two men drinking coffee around a campfire by a stream. Four grazing horses in fore and midground and another wagon with horses and people at the foot of hills in the background. Colors:greens/reds/ochres/browns/orange/yellow/white/black/blue. With carved wood frame in bronzed gilded finish with linen liner.
Upright grand piano. The historic firm of Thomas Goggan and Brothers of Galveston and San Antonio (and other branch offices) was the oldest and largest music house in the state and arguably the best-known Texas piano company. Irishman Thomas S. Goggan moved to Texas with a complete stock of musical instruments and by 1866 opened his original retail store at the corner of East Market and Twenty-Second Street in Galveston.
The St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway Company issued this advertisement. It centers on their newly reduced rates for travelers heading to Texas in the late 1870s.
The Railway operated mostly in Arkansas and Missouri but extended south toward San Antonio, Texas.

- Contest is open to all students in grades 2 through 12
- Any Texas school may participate: public, private, charter or homeschool
- A parent, teacher, or the participating student may submit their contest entry
